Odilon Redon's Nature Morte: a great symbolist achievement

Updated: Jun 14, 2019

Odilon Redon (1840-1916)'s artistic world evokes mystery, dream, meditation, and the interior life.

This peaceful and spiritual child turns an autonomous adult, delivering Symbolist artwork full of mysterious symbols, represented an alternative escape from the real world and the earth-bound limitations of conscious life. Symbolists believed of the suggestion power, rather than Nature description, to be the highest goal of art.

One of his paintings included in the Ordrupgaard collection attracted my attention: La Nature Morte (approx. 1901). A blue plate, a blue carafe, orange and yellow vegetables are set in a humble table, painted with thin washes of oil paint to give a translucent, nearly ethereal effect. This table is surrounded by decorative orange walls...

This scenery evokes an authentic daily moment... Nevertheless, the highly meditative blue color paired with the fearful orange color is an evocative approach characterizing the Redon's message: what we see is not reality, we need to observe better, beyond reality, beyond nature, beyond the visible, to access to another world, only reached through the Spirit and the Emotions.

And what about you? Are you eager to meet the other side of yourself? To reconcile with your true talent?

To go beyond the stars: I invite you to deeply find out your talent with the Redon visionary sensibility experience by reading this fun and lively book. Will you recommend?
