Let's waltz with Erik Satie's humour and infinity!

Updated: May 25, 2019

Erik Satie (1866 - 1925) was a genius compositor, focused on producing out-of-frill music, far from the current academism: the can-do attitude to play Satie is to prioritize a subtle performance, lead by pure emotions rather than accurate musical scores...That is why we can find out multiple interpretations of one composition, reflecting the wide spectrum of Satie's facets: playfulness, loneliness, likeableness, violent temper, brilliance, shutdown to intimacy and at the end, his downright strangeness. The compositor would like to deliver a timeless purity and minimalist music who can be owned by every one of us who is brave enough to face his true personality...

That is the case of the terrific "Je te veux", a waltz created for la Scala of Paris in 1903 with Henry Pacory's words and adapted at the theatre.

Please compare the version of Aldo Ciccolini with the one of Klára Körmendi: the first one is deep and slow, while the second one is lively and quick, what do you prefer?

But on top of that, a close reading reveals a brilliant sense of humour: and this is where magic happens because it is part of Satie's outstanding personality: he features an eccentric sense of humor we can feel in some mysterious notes on his musical scores "play with surprise" or "add a shining touch". The tittles of his songs are also hilarous: Danses de travers (1897), Fantaisie musculaire (1914) or Trois morceaux en forme de poire (1903)!

Let's waltz with Satie and his riotously varied, chaotically creative and captivating way of reaching musical harmony to help you find out your own style!

To go beyond the stars: Please listen to another compositor, Francis Popy (1874-1928) and his Sphinx's music. A gem to dazzle your sense and galvanize your brain to reach true emotions...enjoy this relaxing gateway!
